In one of the most unique pieces of legal maneuvering, the Nonhuman Rights Project brought an action in New York for a common law writ of habeas corpus on behalf of Tommy the chimpanzee who’s being held in captivity.

It seeks the immediate release of Tommy but the critical issue is that it seeks to extend legal personhood to an animal. A thinking, feeling, sentient animal.
