Time magazine cover calls out Chris Christie’s weight
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The honeymoon is over for Governor Chris Christie.
Less than 48 hours after re-election Time magazine does a play of words with the GOP symbol at what many feel comes at the expense of a personal battle for the governor.
The cover showcases a silhouette profile of Governor Christie with the title of “The Elephant in the Room.”
Is this dirty politics or fair game?
Basil Smikle, a democratic strategist says, “It’s an appropriate question with an inappropriate picture.”
Smikle adds that Christie’s viability as a potential 2016 candidate should be scrutinized, but not his weight, “It’s meant to sort of marry the fact that these real questions about his viability that are out there and associate with something that has been dogging him, which is his weight.”
On twitter there was plenty of push back by users criticizing the image.
As for team Christie? A senior adviser within the Governor’s circle told PIX 11 News that they are not commenting.
As for the governor himself? He made no mention of the cover on his twitter feed. Instead he highlighted Esquire magazine for showcasing his 10 favorite Bruce Springsteen songs.
For time magazine this continues a trend dating back to 1938 when they named Hitler as its man of the year, a trend of generating buzz with a controversial cover, “Time magazine sometimes has a history of putting women and perhaps certainly people of color in positions that are unflattering and may send mix messages so this isn’t terribly new for the magazine, but I do think so closely after he had this really solid victory on election night probably not the best image to use,” said Smikle.
There are some Republicans who don’t mind seeing Governor Christie get roughed up a bit.
Those who may very well be going up against him in 2016.
