SHIRLEY, Long Island (PIX 11) — A mother and her three children perished in a tragic house fire on Long Island Friday night.

The fire broke out at a home on Hollywood Drive in the Suffolk County community of Shirley at about 10:15 last night.

Two neighbors, an EMT and a volunteer firefighter, tried to save the family but were not able to enter the residence due to the intense heat and smoke, according to Suffolk County police.

The victims are identified as 41-year-old Jennifer McCusker, her seven-year-old son Aidan Tarbell,  and two-year-old twins Ava Jane and Brendan Mistretta.

Distraught neighbors could be seen hugging each other outside the one-story home as news of the tragedy unfolded.
