Rare look inside the 2nd Avenue subway as it hits milestone

There are hundreds of workers beneath our feet everyday and PIX11 got a chance to see what they do up close.

The 2nd Avenue subway project is more than 56 percent completed — the cavern blasting is over with. All of the blasting will be done by the end of 2013.

If you’ve seen the Metro in DC, then you know what this will look like. High spacious ceilings, much different than what the NYC subways look like now.

The sand hogs are busy at work everyday. We didn’t spot a rat underground, but we did spot a pigeon. Despite criticism over the years, the MTA said it was always within safety perimeters.

The project, according to MTA officials, is running on schedule and on budget. It is expected to be open in December of 2016.
