“Mr. Booker seems a little confused,” that is what Steve Lonegan said minutes after a news conference at the Assyrian Orthodox Church of Virgin Mary in Paramus on Thursday afternoon.
The GOP’s candidate for U.S. Senate in New Jersey held a news conference with Syrian supporters.
Lonegan was desperately trying to change the talking points after criticizing Newark Mayor Cory Booker during an interview on Tuesday. In that interview Lonegan called some of Booker’s responses addressing his sexuality in a recent Washington Post profile as “kind of weird.”
Messages left with Cory Booker’s campaign for a response to the interview were not returned.
Additionally, Governor Chris Christie’s campaign did not return any of PIX 11 News inquiries.
Governor Christie endorsed Lonegan last week before the former head of Americans For Prosperity in New Jersey made such comments.
Governor Christie is now in a very delicate situation. If he were to pull an endorsement of Lonegan it may very easily impact him with Republicans in 2016.
If he doesn’t, it may only become a bigger hindrance in the coming weeks, especially if Lonegan continues to question Booker’s perspective on sexuality.
