Vigil held for transgender woman beaten to death in Harlem

The mother of 21-year-old Islan Nettles attended a vigil in Harlem for her daughter.

Nettles, a transgender woman, was assaulted in Harlem and died a few days later.

Nettles was assaulted just after midnight on August 17th near 147th street, police said.  A 20-year-old-male was arrested and charged with assault.

Transgender Actress Laverne Cox from Orange is the New Black was there pleading for justice for the young woman.

The night was about rememberence and prayers for the family.  Nettles’ mother said life will never be the same for their family.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
