NEW YORK (PIX11) – Anthony Weiner is a seasoned politician and seems to be fully aware of the protocol for a candidate embroiled in a scandal: get back on message.
To that end, the former Congressman and mayoral candidate tried to do just that Friday on Staten Island where he visited a neighborhood still trying to recover from Hurricane Sandy.
This is a campaign in free fall all because of conduct — extreme sexting to be exact — that came to light in 2011 and came to a head again this week when new details of more questionable behavior came to light — complete with his sexting partner’s own account of their 6-month online relationship.
It all seems so familiar, like a bad made for TV movie, the married father, approaching 50-years-old, going through a mid-life crisis.
“I’ve never worked with him personally. But this just doesn’t’ start out of nowhere”, Brateman told PiX11.
But psychotherapist Lisa Brateman questions if that’s really the case.
“Most of the time when people come in, they want to want to get better. They don’t necessarily want to get better. They want you to make it happen magically. So the key is they have to have to truly want it, and not because he wants to be a politician or a better husband, but because he wants to feel better about himself – and he doesn’t want this around his neck for the rest of his career. You know a therapist can only help you in ways that you want to be helped”, said Brateman.
Political analyst Basil Smikle says Weiner’s campaign suffers every times he keeps getting caught in the same cycle of painful admission about supposedly old bad behavior.
“That also bring into question your judgment. They want to know, do you have good judgment to lead this city”, Smikle said.
Dow noted that New York City politics has seen some interesting people with some interesting backgrounds, and asked Smikle if he believes it’s plausible that Anthony Weiner could govern here in New York City, with so much baggage in tow. Smikle responded, “Anthony Weiner’s ability to govern the City of New York – assuming he wins – really rests on how much more is out there, and how much he can just tamp it down.”
