Medical examiner accused of taking home 9/11 wreckage to keep as trophy

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (PIX11)- The thought of anyone taking a piece of wreckage from ground zero and displaying it in their home may sound sickening to say the least.

Even more disturbing is the person accused of doing it worked for the New York City Medical Examiners office.

According to an article in the New York Post Barbara Butcher the director of investigations during the September 11th terror attacks took home a planes exit handle.

A former employee quoted as saying her eyes lit up and she boasted “this will make for good conversation on the coffee table.”

Joseph Strong who almost lost his brother-in-law on September 11th told PIX 11 “I don’t understand what the sick behavior is for someone to want to so something like that.”

According to the published report Butcher was promoted to chief of staff last year and is making an annual salary of $166, 879.  A spokesperson for the ME’s office did not return our calls for comment.
