BRONX (PIX11) - Many people suffered throught the night without air conditioning after a blackout started Thursday night.
At one point this morning Con Edison said 12,000 customers were without power, half of those in the Bronx.
Thanks to massive generators installed in prime locations, Con Edison was able to get almost all of those folks back up and running.
Parts of the Northeast Bronx had dark streets and flashing traffic lights earlier this morning.
PIX 11 came across groups of residents taking refuge in their cara for A/C or simply sitting in chaira on the sidewalk.
“It was too much, so we came outside and brought chairs and some drinks on the sidewalk. Its still hot but at least its better than being inside the hot house. I can’t wait to get the A/C back,” Nicholas Whyte, a resident said.
Meanwhile, Con Edison crews worked quickly to restore power. As of 8:00am, fewer than a thousand customers were without service Friday morning.
Con Edison crews said the blackout was definitely caused by the sheer volume of energy being used by people running their A/C units to stay cool in this heat wave.
