MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, Manhattan (PIX11) - The grandmother of Ariel Russo, the little girl who was killed by a car involved in an Upper West Side police chase, was released from the St. Luke’s hospital Wednesday.
Katia Gutierrez, 44, was walking with her 4-year old granddaughter when they were hit by an SUV driven by 17-year-old Franklin Reyes after Reyes lost control of his vehicle while fleeing police earlier this month.
Russo was killed and Gutierrez suffered a broken leg, broken back, lost a tendon in her elbow after Reyes’ vehicle pinned them against a wall.
Reyes was speeding at 25 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit. He was charged with manslaughter, assault, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.
“She’s upset, you know. This is overwhelming for her, you know. She hasn’t been home, She hasn’t been the the apartment. All this is going to do is bring back memories to her, and you know it’s like another uphill battle” says Alan Russo, father of Ariel Russo.
