New Jersey Transit train hits tractor-trailer in Garfield; Bergen Line service suspended

GARFIELD, NJ (PIX11) - New Jersey Transit service has been suspended in both direction on the Bergen Line after a train traveling from Hoboken to Ridgewood struck a tractor-trailer around 12 p.m.

The incident happened Friday at Spencer Avenue and Hobart Place in Garfield, near the Plauderville station.

Witnesses tell PIX11 News, the driver of the tractor trailer was passing through the railroad crossing when it appears his brakes had locked up, stranding him in the train’s path.

After several failed attempts to dislodge, the rail road crossing gates suddenly descended and within seconds, the oncoming six-car passenger train careened into the tractor.  The locomotive car derailed on impact and the tractor-trailer overturned.
