BRONX (PIX11)– A man was struck and killed by a subway early Saturday morning after jumping on the tracks to retrieve his cell phone.

The incident took place at the station on White Plains Road and East 241st Street.

Authorities say the 22-year-old dropped his cell phone onto the tracks and jumped down to grab it.  At the same time an oncoming 2 train struck the man and killed him.

Witnesses were shocked that the man went down onto the tracks in the first place, some believing it could have been a suicide.

His identity has yet to be released, pending family notification.
