Trayvon Martin texts include photos of organized fighting, drug use

(CNN) — Items taken from Trayvon Martin’s cell phone — including a text-message discussion of drug use and pictures of a gun and marijuana plants — are among new details released Thursday by attorneys for the neighborhood watch volunteer accused of killing him without provocation 14 months ago.

Items taken from Trayvon Martin’s cell phone — including a text-message discussion of drug use and pictures of a gun and marijuana plants — are among new details released Thursday by attorneys for the neighborhood watch volunteer accused of killing him without provocation 14 months ago.

The evidence, George Zimmerman’s attorneys say, paints a different picture of the 17-year-old than the one portrayed by his family and supporters. Lead defense attorney Mark O’Mara says he will try to use the evidence if prosecutors attempt to attack Zimmerman’s character during his trial on second-degree murder charges, set to begin next month.

Much of the evidence disclosed Thursday in filings by Zimmerman’s attorneys comes from Martin’s cell phone, including photos showing a semiautomatic pistol and ammunition and small marijuana plants growing in pots.

Much of the evidence disclosed Thursday in filings by Zimmerman’s attorneys comes from Martin’s cell phone, including photos showing a semiautomatic pistol and ammunition and small marijuana plants growing in pots.

In other pictures, Martin is pictured making obscene gestures in an apparent self-portrait, as well pictures showing him with friends and in other settings.

The text messages include a conversation from November 2011 in which he appears to say his mother has kicked him out of the house after “da police caught me outta skool.”

“So you just turning into a lil hoodlum,” the person with whom he is texting says.

“Naw, I’m a gangsta,” the text message read.

Martin also texted about being involved in organized fights, and included a picture of one. His unnamed opponent, he wrote, “got mo hits cause in da 1st round he had me on da ground an I couldn’t do ntn.”

In other messages, text message exchanges appear to be discussing guns.

“U wanna share a .380 w/ (blacked out),” one text message sent from Martin’s phone reads.

The text messaging logs are also peppered with references to marijuana use.

“I got weed nd I get money Friday,” a message sent from his phone reads.

“I hid m weed,” another text sent from Martin’s phone reads. “its wrapped.”

The attorney for Martin’s family, Benjamin Crump, says the evidence is “irrelevant” and predicted it would never be used at Zimmerman’s trial.

“Is the defense trying to prove Trayvon deserved to be killed by George Zimmerman because the way he looked?” Crump said in a statement released Thursday.

“If so, this stereotypical and closed-minded thinking is the same mindset that caused George Zimmerman to get out of his car and pursue Trayvon, an unarmed kid who he didn’t know. The pretrial release of these irrelevant red herrings is a desperate and pathetic attempt by the defense to pollute and sway the jury pool.”

Instead, he said, jurors will focus on Zimmerman’s arrest for battery on a police officer, a domestic violence injunction and other issues he said demonstrate a “propensity for violence.”

Zimmerman’s defense also released Thursday a handwritten note that was allegedly written by someone who was on the phone with Martin when the confrontation with Zimmerman took place.

The note, dated March 19, 2012, is not addressed to anyone in particular and it’s not clear why the person wrote it.

It reads: “He started walking then noticed someone was following him. Then he decided to find a shortcut cause the man wouldn’t follow him. Then he said the man didn’t follow him again. Then he looked back and saw the man again. The man started getting closer. Then Trevon turned around and said why are you following me!!

“Then I heard him fall, then the phone hung up. I called back and (not legible) no response. In my mind I thought it was just a fight. Then I found out this tragic story.”

Zimmerman recently waived his right to a pretrial hearing under Florida’s “stand your ground” law, which allows people to use deadly force when threatened regardless of where they are.

His attorneys will claim self-defense at trial.

A representative of the special prosecutor handling the case did not immediately return an e-mail message seeking comment on the evidence.

Man this still doesnt excuse Zimmerman. Come on this is Florida, Who doesnt smoke. We have lawyers to Olympic swimmers who smoke weed. Shit Zimmerman Probably smoked weed. Who dont fight.? This is irrelevant. Teens will be Teens. And a SELF APPOINTED NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHMEN with a GUN isnt no different that Gang Member. This man needs to be hanged. And to sit her and deface the dead for being a normal teen. White people sit here and be like he has a gun. But go take their kids deer hunting as soon as they can hold a gun and nothing gets said… Racism at its best…

I agree with you 100% and I'm white as rice. Zimmerman was told to back off and wait for the police but no he wanted to be a big man..And big deal if the kid did puff weed that is not what he was doing when he was murdered, Mr Neighborhood Watch deserves to be on trail and I hope he doesn't get away with it. There is enough injustice in this world.

I agree, none of that is even close to proving Zimmerman acted in self defense. All it does prove is that Martin was a teen who acted like a teen and Zimmerman is a man who acted like a teen. We have to remember, too, that teens today are lacking the maturity teens seemed to have had as recently as 20 years ago. Even so, it comes to this- Martin was unarmed and was not committing any crime; Zimmerman refused to follow the dispatchers advice to NOT persue Martin and instead, he went even further and apparently confronted him! As far as I’m concerned, the ” Stand Your Ground” clause ought only apply IF one is attempting to protect one’s life or the life of another person and only if there are no other alternatives. Also, the one invoking the clause should not be the aggressor at all. Even if I added the protection of property as a grounds to invoke the clause, Zimmerman still does NOT pass. Zimmerman needs to man up and take responsibility for that young man’s death and Martins family and friends need to stop making things worse by inferring that Martin was a model citizen.

As far as any of the testimonies have shown, the only racist actions or comments have come from Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman, while speaking to the Police Dispatcher, Did use expletives when describing the person he was watching, but they did Not include Racial Slurs. I do Not see why this incident ever elicited the attention that it has. Why did the President of the United States decide to get involved and make statements concerning what should have been an obvious and uncomplicated shooting? Would this be happening at all if Both the men involved had been white-or both had been black, for that matter? Would it have been different if a Black Watch person had shot a White man under similar circumstances? Were the authorities pressured by the enormous protest responses by the black community to press charges here? Of course, the taboo question here is, are there rich Black gated communities who would not mind seeing suspicious street attired White men slipping through their streets at night? Is this really the "Elephant in the Room"? Is everyone afraid to say "You rich white folks saw a black man in a hoody at night in your fancy gated neighborhood and right away you figure he's up to no good!". Is it Really necessary to hear the answer for this question? Not really, I guess…..but I wish that it Wasn't…..

Because you know what happened with all the witness saying what they saw and heard. Plus in in any person eyes they kid is good, more when they killed no one can take that from them. Whatever was the case and whatever Trayvon did on his own time doesn't mean he deserve for someone to his life.
