Batten down the hatches!

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning in Bergen and Rockland Counties in New York; the warning is in effect until 5 p.m.  In New Jersey a flash flood warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m. in Eatern Union and Hudson Counties, and until 5 p.m. in Bergen County.

The Doppler Radar is showing storms with heavy rain and winds becoming more intense this evening as thunderstorms track in from the Southwest.

Runoff from the rain will cause rising waters in creeks and streams to overflow, flooding low-lying areas, highways and underpasses.

According to the National Weather Service website, “Do not underestimate the power of flood waters. Only a few inches of rapidly flowing water can quickly carry away your vehicle.”

High winds and heavy rains are also expected through the evening.
