It is known as 5 Pointz and for decades the exterior of the factory warehouse has been decorated with graffiti. The owner, who has allowed the graffiti to remain and grow on the building’s exterior, has requested a permit for a new and taller structure. Plans include new residential condos.
A public hearing has been set in front on Community Board 2 on May 22nd at 7pm at MoMA PS1 (which is across the street from the building at 22-25 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City).
Artists and supporters say they will speak up against the plans. Organizers of the group that maintain the exterior says this has been a site where graffiti artists felt they could express themselves and it prevents it from popping up in many other unauthorized areas.
The Community Board will review the testimony, public comments and owner’s proposal and vote on the issue. A recommendation will be made to NYC’s Planning Commission. The Queens Borough President and City Council will also review the plans.
