Cops seek intruder who fatally stabbed 8-year-old girl

coptape

(LA TIMES) —  As police searched for the intruder who authorities believe fatally stabbed an 8-year-old girl in her Calaveras County home, the rural community where she lived was left stunned.

Leila Fowler was found in her Valley Springs home Saturday afternoon and pronounced dead at a hospital. Her 12-year-old brother had called for help, saying he’d encountered a male intruder in the house. (The girl, a third-grader, was previously said to be 9 years old.)

Multiple law enforcement agencies are still searching for a suspect described as a white or Latino man, about 6 feet tall with a muscular build, last seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and blue pants.

I would have instructed my 12 year old to grab the shotgun and shoot the bastards head off!

I don't think a 12 year old is capable of firing a shotgun. Much less thinking to do so under pressure.

I disagree both of my kids have been taught how to handle a firearm. She is 11 and he is 14. I would have been the one hiding under the bed.lol

Under pressure a kid would probably freeze up. Also, home alone are you implying your firearms are out in the open where your kid could have time to go get it?

        April 28, 2013 at 6:36 PM

NO YOU are Wrong!! I am a stay at home mom!! That is why I said I would be under the bed…lol My firearms are locked up tighter then Ft. Knox, but my kids have been taught the proper way to use/handle them. I don't believe all kids would freeze up, both my kids are Black Belts and have been taught knife defense that Lord I hope are NEVER put in the situation but if they are they have had training to do so. Again NoT full proof and hope like hell it never happens. I guess you assumption is because you would be afraid and wouldn't know what to do.

Yes, I guess we all should just teach our kids to allow themselves to be slaughtered because it is so hard to think under pressure and also because shooting a shotgun might leave black and blue marks on their shoulders.

        Deidara said:

I just doubt a kid would be able to do it. Kids are not murderers unless your kid is Carl and the times are extreme. Plus, that would most likely mean your firearms would have to be out in the open for them to pick up and use, unless they have time to go get the key, open the lock, get the gun out, load it (I assume you don't have loaded weapons lying around), then kill the intruder.

You're an idiot. You're basing your judgement off of your own thoughts.

A child is capable of firing a gun much more easily than many other adults. All you do is pull the trigger right? I know my friend's nephew loves shooting firearms at the range and he knows about the whole home defense situation. I'll tell you this. If someone broke into your home, saw a gun pointing at them, that intruder would run the f*ck away. Also shotguns are hella accurate in close range. Birdshot, you get a spread shot, don't even have to aim exactly at the person.

As a matter of fact, I have my shotgun loaded all the time along with my garand (I put 7 rounds in the N bloc in the garand and all I have to do is pull the operating rod back and it's hot). I leave my other rifles empty (Kar98k, other milsurps) but the home defence ones I leave loaded.

I find your argument invalid and just a general assumption on what you think of the world.

If you don't instruct a 12 yr old how to shoot that 12 gauge, it wil not only not kill the other guy it will also knock the 12 yr old on his ass.

Let's just think for a second…WHY WOULD A RANDOM INTRUDER WANT TO KILL HIS SISTER? When you have a reasonable answer to my question, let me know.

I'm betting that an annoyed 12 year old would have more incentive to kill the 9 year old sister he was babysitting, than an "intruder".

        Harriet said:
        April 28, 2013 at 5:29 PM

An Intruder would more than likely try to take out the one who posed the greatest threat and the little sister would not be that greatest threat. They should question the brother further!

It was his STEPsister. Maybe he hated her? Kids do things like this and give the weirdest reasons. Kids have killed parents because they would not let them have a cell phone for god sakes! Nobody else saw this man. Secondly why would an intruder kill one kid and leave a potential witness who could identify him?

This neighbor is no longer considered credible because she refused to give a composite sketch. They also said that the neighbor originally said the man ran in the OPPOSITE direction then the brother claimed he did.

Parents what were you thinking?? why were these young children left home alone?? Parents are supposed to protect their children not leave them home alone to fend for themselves. Now a 9 year old childs life is over. Such a tragedy that never should have happened. I hope they find the SOB that did this but I think the parents should face prison time for neglectful parenting. They are just as guilty as the killer in my opinion.

Actually, legally, in most states the minimum age is 13 to be left alone.

        Jodie said:
        April 28, 2013 at 5:25 PM

Emily, you are incorrect. Actually, there are currently only 2 states in the US that actually have laws on the books regarding the age a child can be left home alone. Those two states are Illinois and Maryland. The rest of the states that don't have laws on the books usually state 12 is a good age to be home alone and babysit a younger sibling.

I used to be home alone starting at 2nd or 3rd grade before my mom got home from work. It was great. Nothing ever happened to me and I probably became a lot more independent because of it.

Like that would really help the traumatized 12 year old! You would really put these poor people through that?? Your insensitivity boggles my mind. Besides which, 12 is the legal age limit at which children can be left in charge of younger siblings.

      lmc said:

by the law age 12 is old enough to babysit so they were not being neglectful.

I have been to the community of Valley Springs and can not even comprehend this act. When the news says "rural", it means rural. Quiet. Everyone knows everyone. The parents were at a near-by event, less than a mile or so away. They had cell phones on, and it was in the middle of the day. How uncompassionate to say it's the parents' fault for this! I hope you NEVER experience the heartbreak of such an event, and in the dark day you do, are shown more compassion than you have expressed here. A child's life is lost, with no clear motivation. Sad.

I didn't vote for anyone because no one deserved it. What's Obama got to do with it anyway? Why would the very first thought process be to assume a twelve year old killed his sister? Why not first assume that the twelve year old loved his sister like most twelve year olds do? Looking further into the story (as apparently most did not do) a neighbor corroborated the boy's story that there was an intruder. Is the neighbor covering up for the boy? Why? I just think it's sad that people assume the guilt of a twelve year old first before the intruder.

The neighbor is no longer considered credible! So therefore the only "witness" is the brother. Why would an intruder kill one child and leave another alive as a witness? Seems fishy. Sorry.

well, I would never have left my sons home alone at that age, and even teenagers have problems only parents can help with, but that doesn't mean that it would not have had a dreadful outcome in any case. We don't know where the boy was and why he is safe, and his sister killed. Maybe he was in a different room at the time, and able to hide. For all we know this guy might have murdered the whole family if they had been accessable
