Gas-guzzling New York cabs could slowly give way to a quiet electric-powered fleet if the city’s new electric taxi pilot program is a success.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg decided to use National Earth Day to roll out the program.

“It was quiet, I could read. It was nice,” the mayor said of his quick ride in the gas-saving car.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission says the program will be comprised of six new cabs that are charged entirely by electricity.

The commission does add there will be options for the drivers to say no to passengers if they believe the car could not drive out too far without a charge.

Indeed, some cabbies are seeing red about the green program. They say the electric cars simply aren’t practical, citing the need to find a charging station.
