There has been no mail delivery in one Bronx apartment building so people who live there have to hike to the post office to get it!
The mailboxes are busted at 67 West 175th in Morris Heights. Someone vandalized them almost a month ago and ever since, the residents have had to go to the post office. The four mile walk is a pain for seniors without cars.
For resident Gladys Fuente – who just had open heart surgery – the trip is nearly impossible.
“Four miles go and back…this is impossible,” she said.
On top of all inconvenience, the post office even lost Fuente’s last social security check. As a result, all her bills are late and she doesn’t know what to do about getting her next one.
Residents want to know what is taking so long to get the mailboxes fixed.
It’s gotten so bad that neighbors have started a “walk for your neighbor” program where younger tenants pick up the mail for older tenants. But, that can get tricky when the post office asks for I.D to pick up the mail!
“The elderly, that’s what we’re fighting for. We pay so much rent in here and we don’t get the job done when it needs to be done,” one resident said.
Building management says new mailboxes will be delivered next Wednesday and installed Thursday.
