In a preseason blow for the Mets, pitcher Johan Santana appears to have injured the same shoulder that he hurt in 2011 and will likely miss the 2013 season entirely, Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson disclosed Thursday.
Santana, 34, reported feeling weakness in his throwing arm during preseason, and an MRI revealed a re-torn anterior capsule. Santana is set to make $25.5 million this season in the last year of his six-year, $137.5 million contract.
The two time Cy Young Award winner may require a second surgery, Alderson said. If he has the procedure done it may very well mean he will never pitch for the team again after his contract is expired.
The Mets will use Jeremy Hefner in his place to start the season.
