Baby left with note in locked car while mom goes shopping

A photo of a baby left with a note while strapped in its car seat in a parked car has a lot of people talking but apparently – not local authorities.

The disturbed incident happened in New Zealand where a mother left her baby inside a locked car with a note taped to the newborn saying “My mum’s in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything.”

The note also included the mother’s mobile phone number.

When shocked passersby spotted the unattended newborn, they called the number to get a hold of the mother, but of course not before snapping a photo of the scene.

This photo, which shows a baby strapped in its car seat in a parked car, went viral over the weekend after the passerby who snapped it posted it to Facebook.

The photo which eventually found its way on Facebook, went viral over the weekend with several calls for the mother to be charged for neglect.

However, as of Monday, police were not investigating the case as no complaint was ever made and filed.

New Zealand law says its illegal for a child under the age of 14 to be left alone “for an for an unreasonable time or in unreasonable conditions and could result in a $2,000 fine.”

People scream child abuse, and then send their baby boys to a butcher. Now that is child abuse, amputating his body…. This was nothing, this baby will not have physical scars because it was left alone in the car….. Of course the mother needs parenting classes, but this is not child abuse…

People are so quick to scream child abuse, but then when the child needs something no one wants to pay $$$ for the kid. Once the story blows over, who is the one that is hurt, the child, not the people screaming child abuse, because they have already moved to the next big story to claim abuse.

No they shouldn't separate the mother from the child for this. Obviously The baby is dressed, warm, clean, sleeping peacefully, and in a proper car seat. She should be sent to classes to educate her on how to make better decisions when caring for her child.

are you just insane as her no matter what you never leave a baby unattended my gosh
what the hell i think maybe you should get educated yourself bad parenting she don't deserve a child point blank period!!!!!!!

Shopping after delivering a baby? All I could manage was going potty, then back to bed. I still remember the pain of all those stitches!!!

What if the baby started choking or someone smashed the window & snatched the baby, a car could have hit her parked car in the lot & smashed in the side where the baby was……..who knows what could have happened!!!! Irresponsible Parenting at the highest level!! If bringing your infant in a store while you were shopping was too much work than you shouldnt be a parent!

or at least not go shopping!!! but what kind of normal parent would put herself before her child. i understand that parents need time to themselves (i take care of my cousins baby alot) but thats when you sit there and find a babysitter, where was the grandma, grandpa, anyone?

It's child negligence, borderline abuse. It certainly isn't worth defending on your part,
too many bad things could go wrong in this scenario. Very foolish, I mean really..

how many times are you going to repost this? i think people got it the first time, hense the reason why you have -5 on this comment and -5 on the other one.

….listen take your circumcision preaching elsewhere. This is negligence period, imagine if someone came by smashed the window in and took that baby then how would you apply your lame argument, that at least someone didn't steal it's foreskin? Move around puppet.

  • jessica

Make her take the classes and pay a 2000.00 fine. She’s lucky some crazy person didn’t steal her baby.

Uh-Uh…use your brain and take that baby out of that car, put the carseat on the basket like you should have done. If anyone knows what a PITA to shop with kids, it's me but I'm not leaving my newborn baby alone, in the car no less! WTF?

  • nadia

she doesn’t deserve to have the title of Mother…. she is very irresponsible there are so many other options to going shopping without a baby and leaving them in the car is not one of them.. what is she going to do next… this mother is definately not in her right mind.

  • karen

What kind of mother would do something like that. how about someone came and took the baby then it would be an amber alert for some stupid shit like that. Why do she still have that baby?

  • Janelle

I would MUCH rather take a newborn that's sleeping in his car seat shopping then my 3 yr old.. just sayin

    • jada

lol….I was just thinking that Janelle. Mine are 6 8 and 10 now and omg how i miss those days when they stayed exactly where u put them! Shopping was a breeeze when they were babies. At least if you compare it to the begging, i want i want i wants, and the whining that I get when shopping now No way this woman is gonna make it as a mom if she is ALREADY unable to function w/ a kid. B/c as all us mommies know….there's no way it gets easier as they get older. Give me some poopie diapers and nursing any day. It's nothing compared to the daily questions and torments that a good tween can throw at you. lol So sad and really infuriating. I mean, really!!!!! The damn car seat snaps right on the cart?!?!?!

  • linda

It,s truly sad that the world has come to such. But DEFACS is not much better. Kids are just a number and the case workers are not staffed enough to handle the HUGE amount of child abuse cases. The JUDGES let them off way to easy. Can you really TRUST some of the FOSTER PARENTS. Some not al!!!! are in for the money.

  • Pamela

You can make an argument for or against whether this was child abuse, but its clearly child neglect and at the very least against the law..as stated in the article. She definately should be given the fine, but I also believe the person who took the photo and posted it on facebook without calling authorities to intervene, should also be fined..if anything had happened to the baby, they would be just as at fault as its mother.

  • Sherri

There's no way that little baby should have been left alone. I'm not the most maternal female out there, but common sense would tell ANYONE not to leave such a young child. What if there were a fender bender in the parking lot involving this car? What if someone decided to they wanted a little kid and smashed the window to snatch it? What if the baby started choking, stopped breathing? There are SO many things that could go wrong here. The mom most definitely should be charged with, at the very least, neglect.

  • tiff

Shame on the mother!!!!! And shame on the bypasser who didnt call authorities and then posted the pic on the web you are as guilty as the mother!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sonia

take that baby away from her and put her in jail for life ! thats were she belong not at the store !!!!

  • oneintercessor

People are idiots. The law says an unreasonable amount of time. She may have just run in and out super fast. People want to make a case like she was in there for hours. I wouldn't do this, but I also think everyone jumps to the most severe extreme. We really need more government intervention, because the nations are just thriving right now…
