Reems starred with Linda Lovelace in the 1972 pornographic film that went mainstream, becoming a naughty pleasure for many so-called respectable citizens. Reems’ death was confirmed by Gawker.

The film focused on a woman, played by Lovelace, whose sexual pleasure center is located in her throat. Reems played the doctor who made the unlikely diagnosis.

The film became a sensation, and even played a significant role in 1970s politics.

The source who provided The Washington Post with key information in the Watergate scandal was referred to by the paper as “Deep Throat.”

Reems, a New York City native who was raised on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx,  starred in hundreds of pornographic films over the years, but went on to become a real-estate agent after years of battling alcoholism.

Shortly after “Deep Throat” was released,  Reems was busted in a crackdown on obscenity, the only adult film star ever to be prosecuted in such a case.   His conviction was overturned in 1977.

Lovelace had testified against him in the trial, leading to a lifelong rift  with the actress,  according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lovelace died after a car crash in 2002.

Reems’ role in the film — and his subsequent fame — was a fluke, said his friend Don Schenk, according to Gawker.

“The funny thing is Harry was not even supposed to be in the film. He was hired to handle the lighting. Writer/Director Gerard Damiano ran into a casting issue when the fellow hired to play the lead part didn’t show up. Harry was thrust into the job, for which he was paid only $250.”

He was certainly a natural in the part.

“I loved sex,” said Reems, according to the New York Daily News. “I was very promiscuous. And I loved acting.”
