Plan for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ to shoot in Hasidic Williamsburg at Passover spins web of controversy

There may soon  be a showdown  in Williamsburg.

Community leaders are watching Spider-Man’s every move and some say they don’t want him to swoop in for his sequel during what is a holy time for many residents.

The filming of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ may take place during Passover. From March 22nd to March 27th, the streets around the Marcy Avenue Armory may be closed off entirely for filming.

Councilman Stephen Levin believes the timing and the choice of location could wreak havoc on the heavily Hasidic community. Closing off streets, Levin says, would be a disaster for the residents who live here and for the the thousands who travel here during Passover.

A spokesperson for Columbia Pictures says quote “The production is continuing to work with the community and with the Mayor’s Office of Film to minimize any impact on the community, and we’re doing our best to be good neighbors.”

Williamsburg resident and attorney Marty Needelman  says it’s not neighborly to film here that week.

The city said no permits have been issues and no approvals have been given out.

The movie is slated to be released next year.
