The fate of the so-called Cannibal Cop is now in the hands of the jury.
Jurors began deliberating shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon after closing arguments in the case that centered on whether Gilberto Valle intended to carry out heinous acts on women, or whether it was all fantasy.
Valle would have gone through with his plans to kidnap, kill and eat women had the FBI not stepped in, according to a federal prosecutor in her closing statements to a jury Thursday morning.
“The law does not require that we wait until he carries out his crime,” said Assistant U.S. Atty. Hadassa Waxman of Gilberto Valle’s alleged plot to torture, rape and kill women he had looked up using restricted law enforcement databases.
Valle’s lawyers contend that he was simply indulging in his fantasies and never intended to carry them out when he visited hard-core fetish sites and made internet searches on how to kidnap and cook women.
According to the New York Daily News, Valle’s lawyer, Julia Gatto, says that her client’s thoughts are “disturbing and disgusting and you should be upset that someone is thinking them but, they are not criminal.”
