Funeral held for woman found washed ashore on Queens beach; Family still has questions

SOUTH OZONE PARK, QUEENS (PIX11)-  Islamic prayer and words of comfort to the heartsick family during the funeral service for Marisha Cheong.

“She will be ever living in the sense her good qualities her virtuous qualities the good things she has done will be living among the family members,” said family friend Sherry Sewanan.

Mourners, filling a funeral home in Queens, were struggling with the awful circumstances surrounding the death of the 24-year-old Long Island University student.

Friend Sarah Profeta just wants to know why, “I just keep thinking about her, its not fair she was so young and little, why would somebody do that to her.”

Her badly decomposed  body washed up on a  beach in  Breezy Point last Saturday, two months after she went missing.

She was found bound by green rope at the hands and feet, wearing one boot and pajama bottoms.

The medical examiner has yet to determine the cause of death.

“We all know shes the last person to deserve something like this,” said family member Aundrey Azeez.

Marisha was living with her longtime boyfriend 26-year-old Latchman Balkaran when she disappeared on December 19th.

Close family friends did not expect Balkaran to be here and he wasn’t.

“I think it would be safer for him that he wouldn’t  be here. There’s a lot of hatred and anger in people’s hearts.  And the mom I feel did not want to mourn with him.”

Detectives have questioned Balkaran a couple of times.  He has not been labeled a suspect.
