6 surprising things that are making you old — and what to do NOW

Most of us know the big things that age us — stress, smoking, sun. But what are some of the surprising things that speed up the clock? Pillows, straws… really?  Yes, but fear not. There are some very easy solutions to cutting out some of the more unexpected things aging us.  Melissa Foss, Beauty Editor of “New You” magazine stopped by with the details.

YOUR PILLOW

Problem: what could be wrong with a pillow? Well according to the American Academy of Dermatology sleeping on your face, night after night, is one of the MAJOR causes of wrinkles!

Problem: Fat is not that bad word that you’ve been led to believe it is — in fact, According to the director of nutrition at the California Health and Longevity Institute, Paullette Lambert, fat is a protection against chronic disease and aging. It cools down the inflammation from contaminants in the environment and excessive fat.

Solution: don’t cut out fat but instead look for products that have “good fat” in them including nuts, avocado and olive oil.

THE YO-YO DIET

Problem: ditch the gimmicks.  According to diet expert susan Kleiner, when you lose weight quickly you lose both muscle and fat and sometimes even more muscle than fat. The problem  is that muscle is what burns calories and even if you go back to a normal diet your going to gain the weight back because you’ve reduced your calorie-burning capability.

Solution: Focus on portion control, balance and intake of nutrients that help your body stay in optimal shape

CELL PHONES 

problem: a new study by the environmental health trust in washington dc shows that mobile device radiation damages the brains of newborn rats, mice and rabbits when exposed during  pregnancy.
