Horse meat may become primary source of food in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA, (PIX11)-  Poor people in Oklahoma may soon be allowed to eat their horses.

Lawmakers are considering a law that would allow for horse meat to be processed.

Current Oklahoma law forbids horse processing and the sale of horse meat for human consumption.

Horse processing has not taken place in the U.S. since 2007.

That’s when a number of laws and court decisions shut down the remaining horse processing plants in Illinois and Texas.

With all the un wanted horses currently going to slaughter in Canada?… I say why not? Put an end to the unnecessary pain and suffering of the starving in this United States of America.

Really??? You two know nothing about this I can see. Horse meat is toxic and you can't tell which horse it came from. We in the US do not have a tracking system; it was put down by rancher and farmers 2 years ago because they didn't sign up for it. My own horse gets wormer and other drugs that say right on the label "Not for human consumption food animals." If your going to be that stupid to eat meat you do not know where it came from or what it eat then then you might be in for a surprise. And after all this going on in the UK our US horses are not going to be going to slaughter anymore since we can't prove what drugs they have been given. Besides horse slaughter is cruel and inhumane and horses are not goot canidates for slaughter. Just watch some of the videos so you can see just how cruel it is. Do we really need more food in the stores so lease do some more research. There is much more then just the taste of the meat to this issue.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about. When you take cattle to the sale, they don't ask where they came from, just where to send the check if you aren't waiting on it to sell. There are medicines for cattle and hogs both that say to remove for as much as two weeks before slaughter. There are hormones that are to be stopped for a period of time before slaughter. As far as I can tell, you would be better off eating horse. As for the cruelty of it, The horses would be better off being slaughtered for food than starved because there is no market for them and people can't afford to put them down humanely.

As long as it's processed properly, then I don't really see what the problem is. I'm pretty sure there are ways to make horse meat safe to consume.
