Englewood Police believe double murder was committed by someone mother knew

Palisades Avenue in Englewood, New Jersey is shut down after a double homicide occurred  in a first floor apartment; a mother, and a daughter who, investigators say, was just three-years old.

“She’s a good person! She’s not in the streets. She’s not running around with different guys. She’s a sweet person, a very good person. So it has to be someone close to her,” said Englewood Resident Vaughn Simms.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says this does not appear to be a random crime

“We believe it is someone that she knew. There was a response by Englewood police to the scene based upon a reported burglary,” said Molinelli. “We do have several people that we know had access to the apartment. And I do believe it was someone that she did know.”

The mother, identified as  40-year old Tammy Pitts Gaddy, suffered multiple stab wounds.

Police say her daughter’s death was the result of asphyxiation, noting a black garbage bag was found near her body.

“I’d rather not get into what testimony we have from neighbors and witnesses. But we have reason to believe there was some prior issues inside the apartment,” said Englewood Police Chief Arthur O’Keefe
