The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 secondsĀ  after liftoff from Cape Canaveral on Jan. 28, 1986, at 11:39 a.m.The disaster killed the seven astronauts on board, including Christa McAuliffe, who was to be the first teacher in space.
