“I steered it away from the cars”: Quick-thinking passenger stops runaway MTA bus

Guy Paisler had never driven a bus before he was forced to stop a runaway MTA coach Sunday night.

Thirteen people were hospitalized after an MTA bus driver coughed, and then fell unconscious while driving Monday evening,  slamming into car after car on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Guy Praisler, a passenger sitting in the fifth row, jumped out of his seat and ran to the wheel.  Although he had never driven a bus before, he was able to bring the vehicle to a stop.

“I steered it away from the cars and just tried to make it stop,” said Praisler.  “Once I was able to move his foot from the gas the bus just started slowing down till it got to a stop.”

Early reports place about 20 passengers on board.  More than a dozen were injured – some of them seriously.  The condition of the bus driver is not known at this time.

The bus is an express coach the MTA runs up Madison Ave to the Riverdale section of the Bronx, their investigators are on scene tonight piecing together what happened.
