On Sunday, Senator Chuck Schumer warned that already spiking gun sales could see another boost later this month when gun advocates hold a national  ‘Gun Appreciation Day’.

Set for January 19, the purpose of the day is to increase gun sales and gun owner presence to “send a loud and clear message to Congress and President Obama.”

“These groups are encouraging individuals from all over the country to go to their local gun stores to purchase assault weapons,” said Schumer.

Schumer is calling on some of the nation’s largest retailers, such as Wal-Mart, to agree not to sell assault weapons until Congress is able to craft a comprehensive approach to their sale.

“When a mainstream store like Wal-Mart says ‘we’re not doing it,’ it’s going to make people think twice,” Schumer said.
