AMITY HARBOR, L.I. (PIX11) — It was a heart-warming homecoming Saturday for a Long Island family struck first by a young boy’s cancer diagnosis, and then by Hurricane Sandy.
Six-year-old Steven Heckman has acute lymphatic leukemia. His home in Amity Harbor was destroyed by Sandy.
While the Heckmans were away, volunteers led by the National Association Of The Remodeling Trade rebuilt the house with donated furnishings, appliances and more.
Danielle Heckman left her job to care for Steven full-time. With medical bills mounting the family couldn’t afford flood insurance.
Now they once again have a place to live, and to pray for a bone marrow match for Steven, so he can enjoy his new home for many years to come.

I just saw the story about the Heckman family that had there house rebuilt by volunteers. If I am a match I would like to help their son that is I need of bone marrow.

Thank you so much for thinking of my son…Steven at this moment does not need a match, but many children with the same diagnosis (many of which are his friends) do need matches.Because so many children with this type of leukemia have needed transplants, we want to be proactive and make sure he has a lifeline. Until our son is cancer free we will always look for a match for him as well as all the children looking for matches right this moment. You can go to this website and request a swabbing kit to be sent to you by mail, and you will be put into a national registry. Doing this can save so many lives, including my sons.
